History of the Style

Though Chinese martial arts actually predates written history, Kung Fu as a complete martial system finds its roots in the Shaolin Temple around the 5th Century BCE. Monks practiced specialized breathing techniques to support long periods of static meditation, as well as Shaolin Temple Boxing for self-defense.

There are dozens of Kung Fu styles, many which people believe are related to animal defense and offensive tactics in the wild. Holistic Kung Fu includes meditation and energy cycling techniques to train Qi, the body’s natural internal energy, which in turn increases speed and power.

Our style, Hung Ga Kuen (Hung Family Fist) is known for its devastating close-range hand techniques, delivered through a strong-rooted stance. Utilizing the techniques of the 5-animal shapes and 5-elements philosophy, this system combines both hard and soft power to offer a complete system for health and self-defense, as well as internal power and mental focus. Our training consists of rigorous strength and stamina training, mental fortitude and focus work, single and partner skill drills, bare-hand and weapon fighting techniques, hands-on sparring appropriate to ability and skill, Internal training and meditation, and learning/refining of predetermined Forms as part of our standardized curriculum.
